To many believers, Christianity is more like a necessary evil, something they have no choice but to live with. They think they are obligated to follow rules and laws so that they can avoid hell and make it to heaven! To them, that is what Christianity is about! Sad!
This is a far cry from what God intended from the beginning. Think about it! Why would God create people just to obey rules on earth? God created man for a relationship.
Remember His custom was to come to man in the cool of the day to fellowship with man. God would leave heaven with all its beauty and glory, leave all the myriads of angels and come to earth to walk with man in the cool of the evening!
Does that alone not tell you that God loves the company of man? There was something about fellowship with man that made God leave the glories of heaven, and all the angelic worship to be with man.
Note, it was not that man was special in and of himself, God just loved man and enjoyed that fellowship.
That desire has not changed. Although fellowship was lost in the garden, Jesus has restored it fully on the cross.
God is not calling you to rules, He has called you to a relationship with Him. He enjoys your company and hopefully, you will learn to reciprocate that love. Obedience is an outflow, a natural consequence of relationship and love.
Out that relationship, you realise that His instructions proceed from a heart of love and are even for your benefit.
"God will surely do this for you, for He always does just what He says, and He is the One who invited you into this wonderful friendship with His Son, even Christ our Lord." 1 Cor 1:9 (TLB)
You have been invited into a wonderful friendship with Jesus. That's what Christianity is all about...a wonderful friendship with God. Friends love each other's company.
That's the defining mark of friendship. Do you love the company and companionship of God?
God is waiting for you. He's always near and available. You need to cultivate the friendship.
"Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded." James 4:8 (NKJV)
